The Lake Placid Sinfonietta Education Committee is please to announce a residency of the  Frackenpohl Honors Brass Quintet, on Friday March 31, 2023.   The quintet will be in  the Lake Placid Schools during the day and will offer a public recital followed by a meet-and-greet reception at 5:30 PM in the sanctuary of St. Eustace Church in Lake Placid.  This program is presented with support from the Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation.

This quintet is comprised of students from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, was established in 2008 thanks to a generous endowment fund in honor of Arthur and Mary Ellen Frackenpohl. The members are selected by audition at the beginning of each academic year. FHBQ has performed in recitals, masterclasses, and schools across New York state and beyond. In addition to a financial award, the group is coached by Crane School of Music brass faculty and supported in diverse musical and performance experiences. Current members of the Frackenpohl Honors Brass Quintet include Olivia Montagno and Ryan Rafferty (trumpets), Ryan Eckl (horn), Jason Lensky (trombone), and Analiese Meidenbauer (tuba).

During the day, the quintet will visit the Lake Placid Elementary School, the Lake Placid Middle High Schools and St. Agnes Primary School.  The day will include an assembly performance at St. Agnes school, master classes for middle/high school band students and an interactive "Lunch and Learn" session at the elementary school where the entire student body will hear and interact with the quintet during their lunch hour.

The short evening recital and meet-and-greet reception is open to the public and appropriate for all ages. There is no admission for this recital, but free-will donations to support the Lake Placid Sinfonietta's Education program will be gratefully accepted.

Supporting Music Education in Adirondack classrooms

The Lake Placid Sinfonietta has a strong commitment to music education. Since 2002, the Lake Placid Sinfonietta's Education Committee has worked to bring professional musicians and conservatory students from the Eastman School of Music and Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam to local classrooms. The musicians participating in these programs have visited elementary music classes participated in all levels of band lessons, and rehearsals and presented performances for the entire student body. Due to Covid, the 2021 program went virtual, and the Lake Placid Sinfonietta created short, informative videos that are being used in several Adirondack classrooms. The Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation has been an important sponsor of this year's and past educational initiatives.

Bringing professional and conservatory level musicians to local classrooms, gives our Adirondack students a musical experience similar to what is available to students in cities that have access to year-round professional orchestra. In past years, the following schools have benefitted from the education program include the following:

  • Lake Placid Elementary School

  • Lake Placid Middle-High School

  • Northwood School

  • St. Agnes School

  • North Country School

  • Saranac Lake Central School

  • Tupper Lake Central School

  • Westport Central School

  • Johnsburg Central School

  • Keene Central School
