Lake Placid Sinfonietta announces candidates for next Music Director

The Lake Placid Sinfonietta is pleased to announce plans for the summer of 2019 which will be a season dedicated to selecting a new Music Director.    During the 2017 Centennial season Ron Spigelman, now Music Director Emeritus, announced his plans to retire as LPS Music Director at the end of the 2018 season.   From that point on he, the board of directors, musicians and staff began to develop a plan to fill this exceptional position in a way that would not diminish the excitement and engagement we have all felt growing under Ron's tenure.   Ron's timing allowed the Lake Placid Sinfonietta the time to plan a multi-year search for a replacement which began in September 2017 with a nationwide posting of the position.   After more than 100 applications were received, a search committee of board members, musicians, staff and supporters was formed under the direction of former board president Mary Dietrich.   A process was established and followed to narrow the field to the three best candidates who would appear in audition during the summer of 2019.  It is expected that one of these three will be selected as the next music director beginning with the 2020 summer season.   The Lake Placid Sinfonietta can now announce that the three finalists who will appear in audition during the summer of 2019 for the position of Lake Placid Sinfonietta Music Director are Kynan Johns (July 3 through 14), Stuart Malina (July 15 through 28) and Peter Rubardt (July 29 through August 11).

During this process, former Lake Placid Sinfonietta conductor David Gilbert was engaged to return to his affiliation with the Lake Placid Sinfonietta as Interim Artistic Advisor to coordinate programming with the auditioning conductors.  In addition to his past tenure as Artistic Director of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta, Maestro Gilbert holds the distinction of having been the Music Director of the Greenwich Symphony, Assistant conductor for the New York Philharmonic and Principal conductor of the American Ballet Theater.
